Citation Management

Endnote is the citation management tool that is available for free to all UI affiliates. UI Libraries used to have an institutional subscription to RefWorks, another web-based citation manager. We no longer have access to this tool, but you can assure any users who have questions that EndNote Basic is very similar to Refworks.

The desktop version, which needs to be installed from the ITS software download site, is available to all faculty/staff, graduate and professional students, and residents. EndNote Basic (online) is available for free to undergraduate students (and also to faculty/staff, graduate/professional students, residents). We teach HOW classes regularly on both tools or we can arrange an individual session, and users should be encouraged to contact their liaison for training if a HOW class is not available. Tutorials, handouts, and FAQ are also available on our EndNote guides:

When working the reference desk and you receive a question about EndNote that you are unsure about, look at the EndNote guides/FAQ. You might also search online for the problem that they detail. When you have someone on the phone, try to get as much detail as you can about the problem and then share it with the liaison for follow up.  If it seems that the individual is new to EndNote, please refer to them to their liaison for follow up. If no one is available to help them when help is needed OR if the problem seems to be related to software malfunction, please have them contact EndNote technical support at 1-800-336-4474 (option 4)
