Community Borrower's Permits:

These groups of people can obtain a permit:

  • any resident of Iowa
  • any employee at the Iowa City VA hospital
  • anyone here for training or a short course at UIHC/UI that does not have a regular ID card

1. Have them fill out an application and one of our circulation staff will make them a permit. If no one is available, you may use the instructions on the Knowledge Base to make the permit on your own.

2. We need to see a valid PHOTO id.  We do not strictly require proof the person is actually a resident of Iowa.
Currently, staff at the UI Foundation are provided circulation privileges equivalent to a community borrower:  4 week loan period for books with online renewal and a limit of 25 books and DVDs that can be checked out at a time.  We currently offer other professional staff circulation privileges that equal what we provide P&S staff at the University, including those who work at the geological surveys, archaeological survey, and the State Historical Society.  Given our close association with the UI Foundation, the User Access Team recommends providing their staff with circulation privileges equivalent to a P&S staff/Faculty member:  annual loan with online renewal and a limit of 1,000 books and DVDs that can be checked out at a time.

UI Foundation staff are issued borrower’s permits so if and when a staff member applies, please grant them“faculty-like” circulation privileges.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Picking up books for someone else:

ILLs can be picked up by anyone if they ask for the materials.

Hardin Library books can only be checked out by someone else IF they have a proxy card

NO EXCEPTIONS EVER!

Faculty/Staff/Students at another BIG10 University + University of Chicago:

can get a special permit to check out materials from our library, but the process is complicated.

Refer all these requests to Sarah Andrews.
CIC Reciprocal Borrowing Privileges:
Faculty and emeritus faculty with a valid circulation card may check out materials from our collection. More information may be found online at: http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/circ/reciprocal/. If there are questions about this, please refer to Liz Kiscaden.
