Reserve Checkouts at Closing

If someone checks out Reserve material less than 2 hours before close, then the ALEPH computer will automatically assign the next day's opening as the due date. For example, if someone checks out a Reserve book at 10:38pm on a Thursday night, then the due date will be 7:30am, Friday morning. If someone checks out a Reserve book at 5:15pm Friday afternoon, then the due date will be 10:00am, Saturday morning. The patron can return the book in either of our drop boxes. When this happens, you will need to use the 1-day stamper, and then write next to the date the time that the material is due back.  Remember to point out to the patron that, since the due date is the very moment that we open, that they will need to place the material in one of our drop boxes. Also point out that we have two drop boxes, on the 1st floor and the 3rd floor, and that the patron has 24-hour access to both drop boxes. This is the rule for almost all of our Reserve items. However, there are a small number of books, cassettes, and CDs that have a sticker on the front that says "Does Not Leave the Building" (or "Does Not Leave the Library"). These are materials that are usually either very expensive, or in very high demand, and a decision has been made that the material should never leave the building. When you scan the book, a circulation note should appear on the screen, reminding you that the material does not leave the building. When someone wants to check out material that has a "Does Not Leave the Building" status, and it is less than two hours before close, then you will need to manually change the due date to one minute before closing time.

If there is a supervisor in the building, then you should get that person to change the due date. If there is no supervisor in the building, then you will need to manually change the due date to (today's date):(one minute before closing time). The time listed should be in military time - for instance, 5:59pm would be written as 17:59. If you are not able to do this (for instance, ALEPH might only grant you read-only access), then you should go ahead and tell the patron that it is due back in one minute before closing time, and that the book does not leave the building. Hopefully, they will return the book on time.

If you have any questions on how to do this, then please ask Mark, Sarah, or Cassie. A final note: this is the only reason you should ever mess with the "change date" button - changing the due date of materials for any other reason, without supervisor approval, is a serious violation of UI Libraries policy.
