Making Copies

Faxing

  1. There is no public fax machine in the Hardin library
  2. anyone can send a fax from the patient's library--requires a donation
  3. concierge at UIHC will fax for patients/patient's families at no charge
  4. faxing is available for a fee ($1/page for US) at The Iowa City Public Library any time the library is open. International faxing is also available. Send interested users to the 2nd-floor desk at ICPL.

Campus Directions and parking

  1. There is a link to maps from the University’s Main page. This will allow you to find any building on campus and direct patrons accordingly.
  2. There is a link from our home page that has various directions for getting to Hardin Library.
  3. The dental parking lot is only open until 9:00 pm. If patrons plan to leave after that hour, they will not have to pay to get out of the lot.

Lost and Found

  1. Our main lost and found is across from the book drop behind the counter (in the area with the PA system)
  2. We have a small lost and found box at the third-floor desk for valuables. It is in the bottom drawer under the computer on the left side of the desk.
  3. If phones, wallets, or flash drives are turned in, try to find identifying information and contact the patron to let them know their belongings have been found. 
  4. Mark periodically makes a list of everything in lost and found and then sends the contents to UI lost and found so that is another place people can look for their belongings. 

Printing

  1. Black and white printing is $.03 per page and comes out of the student's printing funds.
  2. Color printing iis $.15 per page.
  3. Print keys can be purchased at EMRB café.
  4. If you are helping someone at the reference desk and you pull up an article that they need, it is fine to go ahead and print it for them.
  5. Paper for the public printers is under the counter behind the info desk.
  6. Paper for the staff printer is in Mark and Cassie’s office.
  7. Print keys can be purchased during regular business hours. They can be redeemed at the ITC Printing page -- "redeem" option will be on the left after logging in.
  8. Toner cartridges are underneath the cupboard behind the information desk. When a cartridge is changed, put the old one back in the box and give to Jess. They are refilled and resold at a discount. Instructions for changing cartridges are on the printer menu and in the cartridge paperwork.

Miscellaneous

  1. There is no coffee machine in the building. Coffee can be purchased at the EMRB café during business hours or the hospital during off hours.
  2. There are a small selection of pop machines in vendoland (second floor of the galleria). Go check it out to see what all is offered
  3. Students who need to save material to the computer can do so on their​ H: drive from any ITS computer.
  4. Student Health is located in Westlawn.
  5. ATM’s can be found on the first floor of EMRB, in Boyd Tower (by elevator A), or in the Dental building outside of the patient clinic.
  6. Non-coin change can sometimes be made at the Newton Road ramp. The only other way to get change is to purchase something at one of the hospital cafeterias or EMRB café.
  7. Paper for the staff printer in front of Cassie’s office can be found on the shelves in Mark and Helen's.
  8. Paper for each source is paid out of a separate budget and it is regularly audited. It is important to take paper from the right source for the right machine.
  9. Faculty and staff who are appointed just to the VA (many will have joint appointments with UIHC) are NOT considered part of the university and should be treated as you would any patron from the general public.
  10. A key for the lactation room is at the third-floor desk in the file drawer.
  11. Articles requested through interlibrary loan and article delivery service will generally be delivered in electronic format.
  12. Any questions about locker rentals (or rarely, faculty studies) should be referred to Jess.

  14. Drinks in covered containers are allowed in the library (not in the commons classrooms)
  15. Food is allowed in the Hardin – if someone has something, particularly stinky, sticky, or messy, you can ask them to take it outside.
  16. Reserve books that can leave the library and are checked out less than two hours before the building closes are due back the next day.
  17. The 24 hour study is open year round when the building is closed.
  18. Dry erase markers and headphones are available upon request.
  19. 3rd floor bathrooms are in the 24 hour study area.
  20. 3rd floor bathrooms are the only wheelchair accessible ones in the building.
  21. There is a unisex bathroom on the third floor to the right of the elevator.
  22. Bathrooms on 1, 2 and 4 are located to the right of the elevator (as you are getting off of it).
  23. The campus phone around the corner from the information desk will make local calls.
  24. There is no public copy machine in the building. 
  25. Questions about binding dissertations and theses should go to the Conservation Department website.

In the case of a severe weather warning (and possibilities of a tornado), please do the following:

  1. Johnson County will initiate a siren, or steady tone, for a period of 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. We may also receive a call from the Building Supervisor at the Main Library that a warning is in effect.
  3. The staff member who first becomes aware of the warning should make a PA announcement stating that there is a tornado warning in effect. This can be done from one of the phones at the circulation desk. Dial 5-8254, dial 0 for all floors, wait for a tone, and make the announcement. In the announcement, recommend that patrons move to the 1st floor area.
  4. At the time of the warning, one staff member should check each floor for patrons who may not have heard the warning or to assist users who need help using the stairs. Ensure that student employees have vacated the East Commons and locked the door.
  5. All staff and student employees should relocate to the 1st floor. The 3rd floor desk will remain unattended during this time. Library doors do not lock during warnings. * Monitor weather conditions from the 1st floor desk at www.noaa.gov.
  6. If the time estimate for the warning has elapsed or the warning is no longer in effect, make an announcement that the warning has expired.
  7. If people are injured, call 911. If materials or the library collections are damaged, call staff in the Preservation Department (5-5897). On weekends or evening, contact the library director. 

 

 Please note: When talking with the library patrons do not use words “tornado” or “danger”
