Course Reserves

If someone asks if we have a book on course reserve:

If you are at the 3rd floor desk, and someone comes up to the desk and tells you that they are looking for a book on course reserve:

First, try to see if the book is on course reserve. On our website, at the top of the page, click on the magnifying glass icon next to the search bar. On the next page, click the down arrow, and then click "Course Reserves." Type in the instructor's last name (or the course name, or the course number), and then click the magnifying glass icon.

If the book is not on course reserve: then Mark will need to know about it. If the book is on permanent reserve, then go ahead and check the book out to them. However, try to see if you can find out what course the patron belongs to. Most students either know the name of their instructor, or the name of the course, or the course number, but rarely more than that. That is okay – any one of those facts will help to find the course. If the student does not know their instructor's name, or the class name, or the class number, then that too is okay - Mark can always call the bookstore and see what class the textbook belongs to. Try to get as much info as possible on a piece of paper, and then place the paper on Mark's desk in front of his computer.

If the book is not in the Reserve collection, but is shelved on the 1st or 4th floor: this complicates things a bit. The book cannot be checked out to the patron until its status has been changed to a 2-hour or 3-day checkout. If Mark is here, then he can quickly change the book's item status to course reserve. If Mark is not here, but Cassie, Helen, or Michelle are here, then they can quickly change the checkout status of the book on Alma Cataloging, until Mark arrives to change the book's status. If neither Mark, Cassie, Helen, nor Michelle are available, then you will need to hold on to the book until one of them arrives. At the same time, try to get as much information about the class as possible, as detailed above.

If the book has a regular checkout status, but has been checked out to a patron: then please write down as much information as possible, both about the class and about the book, and place the information on my desk. Mark will initiate a recall of the book.

If the book is not in our collection at all: then again try to write down as much information about the course and book as possible. We will see if this is a book we can purchase, or if this is a book we can borrow from the instructor as a UPC loan.

If you have any questions, then feel free to ask Mark, Cassie, Helen, or Michelle.
