ILL

Notes about interlibrary loan and document delivery

  • It’s a free service to UI patrons. There are no limits as to how many requests can be made, but large amounts may take more processing time.
  • Non-UI patrons (visitors, patients, etc) cannot use ILL. Retired employees need to have an active HawkID to use ILL.
  • Non UI user can purchase articles from subscribed journals for $10-20 but the best option for unaffiliated users is to to access via their public library or hospital library if they have one. If a non-UI patron calls and wants to borrow a book or have an article copied, it’s best to refer them to ILL
  • Books borrowed through interlibrary loan (both lending and borrowing) cannot be renewed by the reference staff and should be referred to ILL
  • Questions such as the status of a request (or any other problems) should be referred to the interlibrary loan department.
  • If a patron wants to obtain a book held at Main or a branch library, it is not ILL.
  • Articles are usually received by patron within 2-3 days from when they submit the request. Books usually around 7-10 days.
  • Books via ILL can be picked up by anyone who asks for the materials.
  • ILL books be delivered to homes or to remote patrons

UBorrow:

A UBorrow search option is also available in and InfoLink. UBorrow checks the UI Libraries’ catalog for an available copy before checking other libraries’ catalogs in real time and places a request directly with the other libraries. If a book is not available through UBorrow, faculty, staff and students can still place a traditional interlibrary loan request and UI Libraries staff will try to obtain it from another library.

Critical Access Hospitals - ILL

Employees at facilities of the Critical Access Hospital Network have access to free article requesting and delivery through Hardin’s interlibrary loan department. To request articles found on PubMed, for free, employees will now need to fill out the form on this page: http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin/jrnloc/. Note that this page originally was intended for people without any affiliation to UI and that it mentions charges/costs - these costs do not apply Critical Access Hospital Network employees. To make sure your affiliation is clear, type something similar to “I am an employee of _____, a critical access facility” into the Comment/Suggestions box on the form. This continues to be a free service.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact either Riley (riley-samuelson@uiowa.edu) or Hardin’s interlibrary loan department (lib-hardin-ill@uiowa.edu).

ILL Account -- Access Troubleshooting

If a patron is gets the error message about their account before the option to sign in, try one or all of these:

  • Use the proxy logout link to have them logout of the proxy in their active browser session (which sometimes interferes with getting to the sign in page): https://login.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu/logout
  • Clear their cache in the browser history
