Hardin Library Alarm System Activation and Deactivation

Instructions for activating, deactivating, and silencing the Hardin Library Alarm system.  The alarm will need to be activated or deactivated at opening and closing of the library or when someone opens an armed exit door.

There are many doors throughout the library connected to the alarm system. These include the following:

The 1st Floor

The emergency exit near ILL entrance

The back corner near the 1st Floor Stacks

IRB emergency exit

1st floor entrance doors by 1st floor desk

The 2nd Floor

West Commons emergency exit

East Commons emergency exit

  1. Stairs on the 2nd floor
  2. Stairs on the 2nd floor

The 3rd Floor

Admin Door next to Folio stacks

An emergency exit by C journals near the 3rd Floor Stacks

A door connected to the 24 Hour Study

The 3rd floor main entrance

The 4th Floor

The Rare Book Rooms door has an alarm that is connected to a different system that only certain administrative employees can access.

  1. To silence the alarm:  Using the keypad at the 3rd floor desk, enter the security passcode “427346” and press the ENT.
  2. Go to the door that was affected and investigate the issue.  Make sure that the door is securely closed.  When you are sure that there is no problem, re-enter the code and press the ESC button to reset the alarm.
  3. Exceptions:
    1. The 2nd floor A Stairs connecting to the Galleria and the 3rd floor 24-Hour Study door have their own keypads.  Alarms on those doors can be silenced from the 3rd floor desk, but the keypad next to those doors must be used to reset the alarm. The 24 hour study door will need to be unarmed at the end of each day to allow patrons to access the 24 hour study overnight.
    2. The Rare Book Room alarm is on a different system and cannot be silenced from the desk.  Only those with Rare Book Room emergency access (Damien, Cassie, and Janna) can silence and reset that alarm.  Also, the police will come to the library when the Rare Book Room alarm goes off.

There is a Reference Desk Alarm System Manual available for people interested in more information.
