Other tools, tutorials, and software that can support your journey to academic and personal success at the University of Iowa: 

  • Google Scholar: By linking Google Scholar to the University of Iowa library subscriptions, you are able to access full-text versions of articles, theses, books, journal articles, and more from the academic publishers and databases to which our libraries subscribe. 
  • Your HawkID also provides you with access to digital versions of a popular news publications, including Wall Street JournalWashington Post, and USA Today. You can also access literary reviews, such as Publishers Weekly and London Review of Books, and international newspapers, such as Die Zeit and Le Monde. More information about these publications and how to access them can be found in our News and Newspaper guide.
  • Browzine is a free app that lets you stay on-top of latest research in your field. With your HawkID, you will be able to access thousands of journals provided by UI Libraries. The app makes it easy to scroll through articles and follow what is being published related to your studies, which particularly helpful ahead of thesis defense.

  • The Chronicle of Higher Education: The University provides full, free access to The Chronicle of Higher Education. Visit the News and Newspapers guide for steps to get full, free access.  
  • New York Times: The University also provides free access to the NYT with your UIowa email. 
    1. To set up access, go to: https://www.nytimes.com/activate-access/edu-access
    2. Type 'University of Iowa' into the box.
    3. Follow prompts on the next screen.
    4.  When you are ready to read, go to https://www.nytimes.com/login, log on, and go! Annual re-registration is required.

  • LibKey Nomad: Tired of logging into proxy servers while researching? The LibKey Nomad browser extension will take you directly to the PDF or full-text page so you can access information faster and determine if a source is relevant to your project much more efficiently! LibKey Nomad can also connect with Browzine for fast access to the most current research. Find out more at this library FAQ!
  • Microsoft Copilot is a generative AI tool that offers enterprise-focused data privacy, unlike other generative chat bots. Copilot does NOT have access to your email, OneDrive files, Teams information, or other Microsoft 365 data. Additionally, it will not remember your searches and will not use the data it generates to train its language model. This means it is more secure than ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. It is encouraged that you use Microsoft Copilot as opposed to other AI tools to protect UI data, user privacy, and intellectual property
