The Perch

The Perch is a reimagined space on the first floor of the Main Library, just across from the new books section, featuring a curated collection of current newspapers, literary journals, and magazines of news, commentary, and opinion. The area is open and available to all patrons to use and enjoy. We are especially excited when The Perch is used as a classroom to support the process-based and creative research needs of students. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please be in touch with andrea-anderson@uiowa.edu or cathy-cranston@uiowa.edu, or you can also submit them here. Submit your request to schedule a class session or event in The Perch using our online request form.

Study Spaces

There are many places to study at the Main Library. The Quiet Spaces Map shows spaces floor by floor.

Group Study Spaces:

  • Private Group Study Rooms are available to reserve on the first floor Learning Commons. Instructions to reserve a room.
  • Lounge seating and movable tables can be found throughout the first floor of the Main Library. Furniture can be moved to create any configuration that suits your needs. The first floor is the loudest floor.

Graduate Study Room:

  • The Graduate Study Room (3132) is on the north end of the third floor corridor. Any current graduate student with a valid uiowa ID card can access the room.

Silent Study Room:

  • The silent study room (2001) is a space in the library for silence–whispering, headphones, or keyboards are not permitted in this space. Remember to put your phone on silent when you enter.

Quiet Study Spaces:

  • Throughout the second, third and fourth floors, there are individual work desks and larger tables located throughout the library stacks. Whispered conversations are permissible.

The One Button Studio

Here, you can capture high-quality audio and video recordings: all at the press of a single button.

More information about creating your recording and saving to an external flash drive can be found online.

You can reserve the One Button Studio online using your Outlook Calendar affiliated with your HawkID:

  • Click on "New Event" in the upper left-hand corner and add a title (i.e. One Button Reservation), any attendees, and the start and end times for the date you want to use the One Button Studio

  • Click on the "search for a room or a location" field and then select "Browse with Room Finder"
  • Under Building enter "Lib Resources" and choose ERM-LIB-OBS (Note: If ERM-LIB-OBS is not listed the studio is already reserved. Adjust the time and date of the reservation and try again.)

  • After you have verified your date and time are correct, click on "Send" to save your reservation.
  • You will get a room verification sent to your university email shortly showing that your reservation has been accepted.
  • Please note that any reservation made using the REPEAT option will be declined.

You can also reserve the One Button Studio in-person by using the lighted panel outside the recording space.

  • If the panel is green, the studio is currently available. Press "Reserve Now" to book the room for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or until the start of the next reservation.
  • If the light on the panel is red, the space is reserved and currently unavailable. If the One Button Studio is reserved, but no one is using the space for 10 minutes into the reservation period, then it may be used by another group.

The One Button Studio in the Main Library is located on the west side of the first floor. Staff at the Service Desk will help you access the One Button Studio during your reservation time
