Research Using UI Archival Materials

Research With UI Special Collections

Located on the Third Floor of the Main Library, University of Iowa's Special Collections maintains a variety of incredible materials that can be used in your scholarly pursuits, including:

  • over 300,000 rare books
  • over 25,000 linear feet of manuscripts
  • hundreds of thousands of documents, photographs, and ephemeral publications
  • thousands of non-commercial sound recordings, motion pictures, and videotapes
  • thousands of "born digital" records

Our Special Collections Department has worked to digitize some of our collections and are available online at Iowa Digital Library

If the collection you would like to look at is not available online, staff may be able to scan materials and send them to you. More information is available on their photoduplication page.

The Special Collections Department created this fantastic Welcome Guide designed to help students discover, request, and view materials from our collections.

Choosing a Primary Source with Library Databases

The following is a selected list of primary source collections. Some collections are freely available online. Resources marked with a padlock icon are available freely for UI students, faculty, and staff through UI Libraries' subscriptions. If you are off-campus you may be prompted to log-in using your HawkID and password through our UI Libraries' proxy server to access UI Libraries materials.

Check Out the Iowa Women's Archive (IWA)

The Iowa Women's Archive collects the stories of Iowa women, their families, and their communities by gathering diaries, photos, scrapbooks, oral histories, organizational records, and other primary source materials from the 19th century to the present.

You can search the collection online or visit in-person on the Third Floor of the Main Library. For more information, you can view the Guide to the Iowa Women's Archive or contact their librarians via email: lib-women@uiowa.edu
