Mendeley for File Management
Mendeley is another resource that can be used to help organize all of those PDF files you download for course readings. It will extract the author, title, and other source information to rename and organize your files. The free version of Mendeley offers 2 GB of online storage and a PDF reader that allows you to highlight and annotate all in one place. For more information, you can view their guides and tutorials page.
Citation Management with EndNote
The University of Iowa provides graduate students with free access to EndNote Desktop, a software program for organizing and formatting citations for publication. In addition to supporting research in bibliographic databases, EndNote helps organize references, images, and PDFs all in one place.
EndNote Desktop provides unlimited reference and attachment storage, reference sharing, direct formatting in Microsoft Word, automatic reference updates, and allows you to 'Find Full Text' in a single click.
Additional information about using EndNote Desktop and tutorial videos can be found in the University's Citation and Managment Program Guide.
If you are interested in obtaining a license for this service, you can contact the University's IT department.
Citation Management with Zotero
Zotero is a free and easy-to-use software that allows students to collect citation information, organize information by project, generate citations, and collaborate with research projects. Zotero is available for download on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
The great thing about Zotero is their browser extension (which works on Firefox, Chrome, and Safari)! You can easily add references to your Zotero library as you are researching online. Simply click on the extension icon and the citation information will be saved to your Zotero library or a specific project list.
Note: Zotero can be accessed after graduation when students use a personal email to create an account. That way, students will not lose their sources.

More information about getting started is available on Zotero's Quick Links page.
