Ready to Return ILL Materials?
If you are local to Iowa City, you can return your materials to the Main Library Service Desk or any of the other UI Branch Libraries.
If you live outside of Iowa City, the UI Libraries will supply free pre-paid return labels for your returns. You can fill out a Request for UPS Return Label Form and choose between having a ready-to-print shipping label emailed to you directly or a shipping QR code that will be scanned at the UPS store (no printer needed).
If you prefer to pay for your own shipping you can send all materials back through the USPS, UPS, or FedEx.
- If sending via USPS, use the following address: University of Iowa Libraries Material Returns 100 Main Library Iowa City, IA 52242-1420
- If sending via UPS or FedEx, use the following: University of Iowa Libraries Material Returns 125 W. Washington St. Iowa City, IA 52242-1420
Making Interlibrary Loan Requests
If you ever come across a source that you are unable to access, you can make an interlibrary loan request and the UI Libraries will work on borrowing physical and digital materials from other libraries. You can initiate the request directly through InfoHawk+ or by following the interlibrary loan request link.
Interlibrary Loan is a FREE service available to all UI students, staff, and faculty to gain access to books, articles, reports, theses, microfilm, videos, and other research materials. Our distance learners can even use interlibrary loan to get these sources mailed to their home or office address.
The Easiest Way to Make a Request: InfoHawk+
You can quickly request books, music, and videos directly from InfoHawk+:
- Make sure that you are signed in
- Locate the material you would like to access from our catalogue and click on the title to open the source record.
- Underneath the "Find in Library" heading, you'll see a list of options for requesting the unavailable material. You'll want to click on "Request this book by Interlibrary Loan" link.
- The link will direct you to the Interlibrary Loan Request portal and auto-populate most of the information fields for the source you are requesting. At the top of the form, select where you would like to have the source sent. This can be the Main Library, one of our branch libraries, or your personal address.
- Make sure all of the key fields (author name, title, publisher, edition, etc.) are filled out before submitting and then scroll down to the bottom of the page. After answering the remaining questions, click "Submit Request".
- Notifications about your request will be sent to your university email.
Using Interlibrary Loan for Document Delivery
You can also use an interlibrary loan portal to request PDF scans of specific chapters of books in our stacks as well as materials held off campus at our Library Annex, making it easier to research remotely.
To do this, you'll:
- Open the record for the title you want to request in InfoHawk+ and select Request PDF of Book Chapter
- You will be redirected to our InterLibraryLoan service form, where you will be asked to log into a proxy server using your HawkID and password.
- Complete the Document Delivery Request Form. Some fields auto-populate (such as the book title) in the form, but be sure to fill out the chapter title and page range that you are requesting be sent to you. When you are finished, scroll to the bottom of the form and click on the box that says Submit Request
- You will receive and email when your request has been completed and will receive a link that will allow you to access and download your PDF
