Request streaming videos

The Libraries receives many requests for streaming video throughout the semester, and the requests are processed in the order they are received. There are a few steps that can be taken before requesting the movies that can make the process more efficient and help ensure that the resources for the course will be available when needed:

  • Request materials early
  • Check InfoHawk+ and Swank to make sure the title is not already available through the Libraries in the desired format. Movies available through Swank do not show up in InfoHawk+ search results; please check the Swank database directly
  • Check movies' expiration date and request their renewal if needed

Request streaming video of a movie that the Libraries owns in DVD/Blu-Ray/VHS

Add the DVD/Blu-Ray/VHS to the list and add the "Electronic Item Purchase Request" tag (click on "Add tags to item" and scroll down to see that option)

Request streaming video of a movie that the Libraries does not own on DVD

  1. Add the movie to the list using a Blank Form or the Cite It! bookmarklet. We recommend adding the movie from IMDB using Cite It!
  2. Add the "Electronic Item Purchase Request tag".

Renew streaming video

To request that a streaming video license be renewed, add the movie to your list and add the "Electronic Item Purchase Request" tag to the item in Course Materials+. To check if a license will need to be renewed, check the expiration date:

Checking the expiration date of movies on Swank

Go to the movie's page on Swank:

Checking the expiration date of movies on Kanopy

Our current Kanopy subscription provides continuous access to available movies, with no expiration dates. Kanopy titles to which we don't currently have access can still be requested for curricula and research.

If there is a change to our Kanopy subscription model, this guide and our InfoHawk+ records will reflect that.

Checking the expiration date of movies hosted by the Libraries

When we can purchase the license, but the film is not part of a database, like Swank, we host (store) the movie files. This is the case whenever the url for the movie begins with lib.libres.uiowa.edu/

Those movies are part of our collection and can be found on the catalog. The expiration date will be listed on the catalog and in Course Materails+:
