Music Citation Guide: Articles
Citation Examples By Format
In-text Citations
In-text citations are simple. You must include the name of the author or authors and the year in which the article was published.
Examples:
Most education articles are co-authored, and there are guidelines for how to cite multiple authors without having to list every single author in every single in-text citation.
- If the article has two authors, cite both authors every time. After all, it's just two names.
- If the article has three or more authors, then the first time you cite the article, you must list every author. However, all remaining citations of the article may be shortened. List the first author and then the phrase "et al.". You can also drop the year, but only if the first citation isn't parenthetical (like Example 3 above).
Example: "Cohen et al. observe that..."
If you have articles with the same first author, you'll need to cite additional authors to help distinguish between the articles.
