Materials in Special Collections are available for the research needs of students, faculty and staff of the University, and the general public. All materials are housed in a controlled environment and, generally, can only be used in either the Special Collections or Iowa Women's Archives reading rooms.

Researchers will be required to present proper identification and must abide by Special Collections and Iowa Women's Archives policies and procedures.

We have many unique, rare, and old items. To help preserve them for as long as possible so as many researchers as possible can use them, we have a few basic handling rules. This list is not exhaustive, though, and you should review the policies and procedures in their entirety.

  • No food, outside paper, pens, coats, or bags are allowed.
  • Keep materials on the table. We move people, not books or papers.
  • Be gentle when handling materials, but you can touch them (except in rare cases where staff may have to handle for you).
  • Do not write on top of the materials.
  • Only take notes with pencils.
