Actuarial Science: Citation Help

Welcome! The purpose of this page is to assist you in formatting citations and creating your bibliography. There are many different formats to use when citing a source in a paper.

  • If you are writing a paper for a class, you should use the format recommended by your professor.
  • If you are writing a paper for publication, you should use the format recommended by the publisher.

Below, you will find links to citation styles and citation management tools you can use to collect, organize, and format your citations. If you have any questions, problems, or comments about citations or the tools recommended in this guide, please contact a librarian.

ASA Style Guide

The American Statistical Association Style Guide is often used by students in the Actuarial Sciences to format their manuscripts, citations and reference lists. You should check with your professor to make sure this is the format you are supposed to use. The following link is a reference guide to the ASA format. If you need additional help, please ask a librarian.

The word "BibTeX'' stands for a tool and a file format which are used to describe and process lists of references, mostly in conjunction with LaTeX documents. Most UI Libraries' databases have an option to export citations in BibTeX format.

EndNote Desktop and EndNote Basic are two versions of software for organizing and formatting citations.  Full information for setting it up and using it with sciences databases, and for using it with BibTeX, can be found in the guide below.

Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources. It lives right where you do your work—in the web browser itself.

Sciwheel is another reference management software that all University of Iowa students and staff have access to.  Learn more by going to the Sciwheel guide.
