News and Newspapers: Research Tips
Research Tips
Getting started with a research topic, search terms, and where to locate newspapers online.
Visualize Your Topic
A good research topic is one that interests you. Spending time becoming familiar with background information on a topic is a good place to start. Remember that research takes time, and if you ever need to consult a librarian for help you can make a research appointment or chat with a librarian.
Once you have read your class assignment carefully, creating a concept map is a good way to start brainstorming your topic and find search terms. A concept map can help you visualize which direction you want to start researching and pull out main ideas. Watch the video below for a more in-depth description of concept maps.
Locating Newspapers Online
There are several ways to access newspapers through the University of Iowa Libraries:
- One way is by searching the Electronic A-Z to see if a specific newspaper is available.
- Another method is to search using the "newspapers" tab to the right of the InfoHawk+ search bar. This will allow all keywords to be searched through newspapers held by the University of Iowa Libraries.
- The Media Collection at the Iowa Main Library contains microfilm, microfiche, and microcards that are available to check out. There are also approximately 250 microform guides stored in the University of Iowa Main Library Media Services Department. More information can be found here.
What search terms should I use in an online database?
- Effective search terms can help you find relevant information faster. If the database gives the option to use Advanced Search, this will help narrow down the information.
- Instead of searching an entire sentence, try using different keywords and their synonyms. Example: “Titanic sinking significance" instead of “what is the significance of the Titanic sinking?”
- In an Advanced Search option, you can use Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT) to improve your results. Example: "Titanic sinking" AND "causes."
- Try narrowing down your search by date or location.
