Business Library Course Reserves: For Instructors

Course Reserves

The Business Library:

  • Places UI Library books on reserve.
  • Places personal copies on reserve.
  • Scans book chapters for upload to ICON.
  • Acquires some texts automatically through the Textbook Affordability Pilot.
  • May purchase e-books for a course.*

*Contact a librarian.

Instructors can place e-reserves (online video, PDFs, e-articles) into an ICON reading list themselves. For instructions, see Online Journal Articles and Streaming Video in this guide.

Instructors can also use Course Materials+ (CM+) to create a entire reading list on their own [see below].

Course Materials+ (CM+) NEW!

The UI Libraries are introducing Course Materials+ (CM+) which allows instructors to easily create reading lists.  The official product name is Leganto.  In particular, citations from the UI Libraries discovery tool, InfoHawk+, can be placed in an ICON reading list to provide access to both online and physical items: electronic articles, streaming media, digitized content, books and more.  For a physical item (e.g., a library book) or a chapter scan, Leganto will alert UI Libraries staff to prepare the item for reserve.

To use CM+ In ICON, go to Courses, Settings, and then Navigation. Select CM+ and save.

Useful introductions are Leganto - The Ex Libris Reading List Solution and A Faculty Perspective of Leganto – Making Course Resource Lists Easy - Bing video.  A more detailed resource is the ExLibris guide Leganto: Instructors.

  3. Add the persistent link to ICON.

Note: the Harvard Business Review imposes numerous restrictions on linking to its articles.  Contact a librarian for options.

You can also use Course Materials+ (CM+) [see above].

Streaming Video

The UI Libraries provide access to streaming videos you can use in your course. If the service does not provide a sharing option, find out how to make persistent links to videos.

You can also use Course Materials+ (CM+) [see above].

Reserve Policies and Copyright

Reserve Policies

  • Since some courses use the same material over multiple semesters, physical items are left on reserve for at least a full year.
  • Personal items may be damaged by heavy use, are stolen occasionally, or may not be returned by a borrower. The Libraries cannot replace missing or damaged personal material.

It is the instructor's responsibility to find out if materials fall within the "fair use" definition for teaching:
