From “Making a Paradigm Shift from Diversity to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion”
“The University of Iowa’s status as a premier research university depends on the robust exchange of ideas. The diversity of our students, faculty, and staff helps us fulfill our mission to explore, discover, create, and engage. Thus, we are committed to supporting every Hawkeye’s pursuit of excellence. As we enhance the breadth and depth of our perspectives, we purposefully prepare for our future. Our ability to foster an equitable and inclusive environment for all who join the UI family will determine our collective success. We eagerly accept this challenge.
At the UI, we achieve excellence through diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
As someone who has responsibilities for diversity, equity, and inclusion—be it by way of teaching a course, serving on a diversity committee, or possessing a job with stated diversity and equity goals—you are now a part of what makes the University of Iowa an incredible institution that is constantly growing. Your efforts and contributions will help move us towards excellence and we hope to provide you with the resources, tools, and strategies to succeed in this pursuit.
Holding diversity, equity, and inclusion responsibilities is not always easy. There are hard conversations, challenging moments, and times where we will be pushed both personally and professionally. We hope that by acknowledging the work and the time that goes into this, you will feel appreciated and seen for what you do. Additionally, we hope that by providing resources and opportunities for connection, you will feel empowered to bring yourself and your units, teams, or classes to new heights of excellence.
For taking on these roles and responsibilities, formally or otherwise, we humbly thank you and look forward to working with you in the future. Please find below several resources that speak to knowledge, skill sets, or strategies that apply to the following general roles you might inhabit:
These roles and responsibilities are not mutually exclusive, so we encourage you to pull from any of these categories if there is something you might find useful or applicable for your current context. If you have any questions, please know that there is a community of peers that are serving in similar roles or are doing similar things all across our campus.
