Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Ready to Learn More

A collaborative effort between the University of Iowa Libraries and the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

I'm Ready to Learn More About Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Now that we have introduced the some of the foundational concepts, we can build on prior experience and complicate our current understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As we become more aware of the systemic structures all around us, we also become more aware of the part that we play in maintaining those structures, however unintentionally. With our ever-expanding understanding of oppression, we become more responsible and accountable to ourselves and our community to:

  • disrupt harmful systems; ·
  • support marginalized groups;
  • implement equitable policy changes.

We encourage you to practice the skills and reflections we have offered thus far. We might even suggest that you share one of the resources you’ve read with a friend and talk with them about it! As we gain more nuanced knowledge, we also want to gain more competency around using, sharing, and applying that knowledge.

Please keep in mind that the materials listed are not exhaustive by any means and those listed serve as launching off points for further research and exploration. For the purposes of exploring each identity in more depth and providing a solid foundation of knowledge, we’ve separated the different identity categories out below.

You will find that there are several materials that could fall into a couple of the identity categories listed. One of the complexities of diversity, equity, and inclusion is that we can never truly separate one part from the whole, even when we try to focus in on just one experience. We accept and embrace this “messiness” as part of learning and encourage you to do the same.

“When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else." - Toni Morrison

Exploring Different Social Identity Groups

Reminder: Please keep in mind that the materials listed are by no means exhaustive and that the intersectional nature of our identities makes looking into specific social identity groups more complex and nuanced than they might seem at first. Some of the items below could include multiple social identity groups and/or a specific intersection of social identity groups. For simplicity’s sake, we have not duplicated said materials in every list that it could technically fit in. We encourage you to reflect on your own nuanced identities and lived experiences while you explore this page!
