About Iowa Research Online

What is Iowa Research Online?

Iowa Research Online (IRO) collects and showcases the innovative research, scholarship, and creative work produced by the University of Iowa’s talented faculty, students, and staff. Its purpose is to foster discovery and collaboration as well as demonstrate the impact of teaching and learning in Iowa and beyond.

Searching IRO

Use the search bar to search Iowa Research Online by title, author, or keyword. Use the dropdown menus to change your search type (Works or Researchers) or search within a collection (Open Access, Dissertations & Theses, or Faculty Output).

Sort by

Results are sorted by Relevance by default. Use the dropdown menu to change the sort to Date-newest, Date-oldest, Title, or Author.

Facets

Use the facets/filters on the left hand side to narrow down your results. Filter by AvailabilityOur Researchers (UI authors), Resource TypeResearch unitDateSubject, and Language. The numbers to the right indicate the number of works associated with each filter. Check the box to Include and the circle with a slash to Exclude works from your results.

The results list includes the brief view of each work matching your search parameters. The brief view includes the Resource Type, Availability, citation information, and a preview of the abstract. Click the title for the full view.

Essentials

The top section of the full view includes the essential information about the work, and options to Share and Export.

View Online / Files and Links

If there are any files or links associated with the work, they will be found in the Files and links section. Click the Download or View buttons to access the content.

When no files or links are available, the View Online section will display options for accessing the work through the Libraries' subscriptions and additional services.

Abstract and Details

The Abstract section includes a description of the work, if available, as well as any associated subjects or keywords.

The Details section includes all the metadata associated with the work.

Metrics

The Metrics section includes usage statistics about the work, including:

  • Record views - the number of times the work's full view has been accessed in IRO
  • Downloads - the number of times the work's associated files have been downloaded from IRO
  • Times Cited - Web of Science - the number of times a work indexed in Web of Science has been cited
  • Altmetrics - Altmetrics attempt to capture the impact of the work outside the scholarly literature, including mentions in the news, blogs, social media, public policy documents, and citation managers. Only works with DOIs (digital object identifiers) can be tracked with Altmetrics.
