POLI:1501 Introduction to American Foreign Policy: Research Strategy

Secretary of State Maro Rubio

Research Strategy

Think about logical search terms and their synonyms as you begin your search.

Seek out on-line reference tools like encyclopedias and specialized dictionaries to:

  • gain and understanding of the subject matter
  • build a relevant vocabulary
  • gather background information to understand the issues

Find a variety of source types including books, journal articles, authoritative Internet sources, etc. in order to provide varying levels of subject treatment.

Focus on the topic:

  • Take notes to document your research path (terms used, resources searched).
  • Follow footnotes and investigate bibliographies
  • Evaluate the research value of sources consulted in context of your topic

Be judicious in your use of AI search tools. Most topics are complex and included competing and contesting factors. Reading summaries can give you an overview but understanding context and making your own connections are key aspects of your learning.

Ask a librarian for help developing a research plan
