EndNote Basic is a web based citation management tool that supports importing, organizing, sharing, and formatting references, It is available for all UI students, faculty, and staff with the creation of an account. There is no installation to begin use, but an optional plug in can be configured to enable insertion of formatted in text citations within Word documents.

What is EndNote Basic?

EndNote Basic is a web-based bibliographic management tool for collecting, organizing, sharing and formatting citations.

All University of Iowa students, faculty and staff are eligible for a free EndNote Basic account.

Known Issues

Internet Explorer 11 (April 3, 2014) Users have reported they are unable to edit references in EndNote Basic when using Internet Explorer 11. This problem has been reported to EndNote Support and will be resolved as soon as possible.

In the meantime, users can fix this problem by using another browser such as Firefox, Chrome or Safari or by adding to their Compatibility View settings. To do this, please:

  1. Click on the gear icon near the top right of your browser.
  2. Click on "Compatibility View Settings."
  3. Click "Add" to the right of the box that says "Add this website."
