This website, the campus viewing stations, and the free eclipse glasses were brought to you by our sponsors, the Department of Physics & Astronomy and the Sciences Library. Thank you!
Built on the spaceflight legacy of Professor James Van Allen, the University of Iowa Physics and Astronomy Department is located at 30 N Dubuque Street.
Roughly 120 undergraduate students major in astronomy, physics, and applied physics. The ~30 faculty, ~20 research staff, and ~70 graduate students pursue research in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Condensed Matter and Materials Physics, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Plasma Physics, Quantum Information, and Space Physics, as well as five interdisciplinary areas.
The Sciences Library is a place to connect people and information.
Opened in 1999, the Sciences Library is conveniently located in the center of campus, on Iowa Avenue, between Phillips Hall and the Biology Building. Situated in a grassy courtyard, this impressive Beaux-Arts style structure was originally the Anatomy Theater for the Medical Department.
Today, it is filled with quiet and group study areas, and equipped with all the technology you need. The Sciences Library has books and journals in astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and more, and provides access to over 5,000 electronic journals and science-related DVDs.
