N is for Notation

Postal Pieces / James Tenney

[Baltimore, MD : Sonic Art Editions, 2005?], c1984.
Rita Benton Music Rare Book Room M1470.T45 P68 2005

This set of 10 postcards each contain a musical work. The examples of notation they contain are diverse and in several cases, visually striking. There's a work written using standard notation, but in a round. Three of the postcards simply provide instructions as text for how the piece is to be played, but no actual pitches or a staff. One work, Beast, uses a squiggly lines to show the contour of the work, as well as timestamps, but again, no true pitch assignments. Overall, Postal Pieces is a fine example of musical notation, both as we expect it to be and in some ways that we do not.
