Circulation: Alma Institutions

Libraries that Use Alma

IMPORTANT!  The type of loan described below occurs rarely at the Business Library.  Please check with full-time staff if a member of another institution would like to borrow library materials (see "Walk-In" below).

A mutual-lending agreement exists among several regional Libraries that use Alma.  This group is called "Fast TRAC" and includes the University of Iowa.  Students and staff can search member institutions and then request material to be sent to them for loan.  Also, people from one member library can visit another and use their ID cards to borrow materials.

Hold & Transit

A book to be held for someone from another institution is treated like a regular hold.

If you receive a book to be sent to another institution, a transit slip prints with the institution's name at the top.  Give the book and slip to your supervisor.  The supervisor will make sure the volume is returned to its home.

Walk-In

If someone from a Fast Trac institution visits the Business Library and asks to check out a book, contact your supervisor.  The procedure below is used for loans, though you are not required to perform the check-out:

  • At the loan screen check "Find user in other institution".
  • Select the institution from the pull-down menu.
  • Scan the person's University ID.
  • Alma copies the individual's info. from their home library.
  • Click "Update User".
  • Scan the book.
  • The loan period is 90 days.

IMPORTANT!  Sometimes a patron's ID card will not scan.  If you encounter this problem, type in the ID number without the initial zeros, or example, 000136592.
