Discovering and understanding one's research impact can be a complex endeavor.  This guide’s goal is to help faculty members applying for promotion and tenure to make the case for excellence in scholarship by using tools such as citation analysis, journal metrics, and other methods. Newer faculty who are just starting to publish can also benefit by using these tools to develop effective publishing strategies.

Journal Metrics explains how to gauge the impact of individual journals and compare them to others in their discipline using journal metric tools.

Author Metrics includes tools to show the influence and productivity of an author/researcher.

Citation Metrics includes guides for completing cited reference searches on many databases and websites available through the UI Libraries, illustrating the number of times an author or published work has been cited.

Altmetrics provides new means of measuring a scholar's impact based on their presence in the social web using online tools and environments.

Where to Publish provides information to help determine journals in which to publish and which journals to avoid.

• Expert searching skills - librarians can find citations of your work wherever they may be
• Ability to use information tools creatively - librarians use a number of tools to paint a complete picture of the impact of your scholarly work
• Neutrality - librarians can provide an external perspective for your department or the P&T committee
