Nineteeth Century Music Periodicals: Home

Getting Started

image from title page of guida di musica by james hook depicting chamber musicians, including a woman playing tambourine, a man playing violin and man playing cello and a woman at the keyboardSearching for information about music in the nineteenth century means looking through journals, magazine, newspapers, and other periodical resources. The Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals (or RIPM) provides indexed searching of much musical literature from this era. Open access, large-scale digitization projects, such as HathiTrust, provide a great deal of access to the full-text issues. For any articles not available open access or in print at Iowa, Interlibrary Loan can be used to obtain content.

The HathiTrust Nineteenth Century Periodicals collection will be reviewed annually for additions, as will the list of Periodical Literature with links to full-text.

Guide content supports the teaching and research goals of multiple departments on campus. Content represents a non-exhaustive selection of essential resources and tools for engaging a wide range of backgrounds and viewpoints.
