Tape is probably the most ubiquitous recording format of the 20th century because it could be used by professionals and amateurs alike to create and manipulate sound. Despite the fragility of certain tape formats and problems of long-term preservation, it is still used in the creation of analog and digital sound & video recordings today.
However, it's the mixtape - those glorious time-bound compilations created for the love of music and shared amongst friends - that is often what people remember most fondly about this particular recording format.

Vinyl records of all speeds (78, 33/13, and 45 rpm) defined the home listening experience for most of the 20th century, including the album, singles, and liner notes. Tape allowed for recording and rerecording, but vinyl was very much about the static package. Usurped by the compact disc in the 1990s, vinyl held as the top commercial sound format for over seventy years. There's interest from collectors and audiophile in maintaining the format, as many appreciate its warm, analog sound that contrasts with the sometimes sterile sound of the all-digital studio.
