Clear your browser cache
To speed the loading of web-pages on repeat visits, most web browsers temporarily store a copy of the page and load it from memory rather than getting a fresh copy off the web. Sometimes, if there is a problem loading a page or a problem with access through the proxy server, the error message page will be saved and loaded over and over again even after the problem has been solved.
1. Go to any non-UI webpage (to avoid reloading the error page immediately).
2. Clean your broswer's cache or Temporary Internet Files. There are many instructions online for various browsers and Indiana University has a good set of instructions.
3. Try to access your video again through the UI Libraries.
Most streaming services require some sort of media plug-in to work with browsers. Often, these are included as part of the browser but sometimes get out of date and need to be updated. If you can not update a media plug in in your browser, try using a different browser to view the film.
All links from the UI Libraries to databases, journals, films or any other online resource we subscribe to or pay for use a proxy server to allow access from off-campus. With the proxy server, anyone clicking the link from off campus will be asked for their hawkid and password and, after logging in, will have the same access that they would on campus.
There are a number of ways the proxy server can be bypassed. One common way is someone logging into a UI database and copying the url from their web-browser address bar. Generally, that link will not include the proxy server information and, when someone tries to use it from off campus later, will not allow them access to the resource. That can be pretty frustrating.
Identifying a proxied link:
Look for the string proxy.lib.uiowa.edu in the URL.
If your link does not indicate uiowa somewhere in it, it will probably not work from off campus.
