Use this sample search to guide you through the Browse feature on the Library of Congress's catalog.
1. From the Library of Congress catalog webpage, select Browse on the left side of the page.
2. Use the drop-down menu that appears to select your search criteria. For this search, selected SUBJECTS containing from the drop-down and entered the topic I wanted to research - race riot Oklahoma
3. Items with my selected topic appear. I'm interested in the second one for now - Tulsa Race Riot, Tulsa, Okla., 1921--Press coverage--Oklahoma--Tulsa.
4. Click on the record that you are interested in. An expanded view will appear. Scroll down within the record.
5. Within the item's record, there will be a listing of Subject Headings. If these seem relevant to your topic, make a note of them and use those subject headings when searching archives, card catalogs, and databases. In this example, I now have the name of two newspapers as well as other subject headings to use.
2. Scroll down to record #6. It is the record for an e-book, "Reconstructing the Dreamland; The Tulsa Riot of 1921: Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation" by Alfred L. Brophy.
3. Click on the record and the book's details will appear. You can scroll down for more information without going into the full text of the resource.
4. As you scroll down, subject information will be revealed. InfoHawk+ uses the same Library of Congress Subject Headings from our search above. Look at the subject headings that are related to your topic and use them as you continue to research.
