Business Analytics & Information Systems Toolkit

About the major

The Business Analytics and Information Systems major prepares students to leverage technology and analytical techniques to solve problems and help organizations make data-driven decisions. BAIS students learn to capture, clean, and store data, then analyze that data to provide insight.

Using statistical models students are prepared to help organizations make data driven decisions by leveraging:

  • Descriptive Analytics
    • What is happening?
  • Diagnostic Analytics
    • Why is it happening?
  • Predictive Analytics
    • What is likely to happen?
  • Prescriptive Analytics
    • What do I need to do?

In addition to technical skills, students learn to effectively communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences. Students are able to leverage these skills, in addition to their business education from the Tippie College of Business to bring value to organizations across any industry.

All students are prepared with foundational data and analytics skills from the BAIS core courses. Students may then choose from a variety of electives to support their career aspirations.

Graduates find work as business analysts, data analysts, data scientists, technology consultants, risk analysts, auditors, systems analysts, technology sales and support, IT project managers, and Product Owners. Our graduates are qualified for 6 of the top ten jobs in the US (as compiled by Glassdoor). According to the University of Iowa placement statistics, greater than 90% of our graduates have found jobs in their field of study, have been accepted to graduate school, or are actively not seeking employment within 3 months of graduation (https://careers.uiowa.edu/post-graduation-data).
