AI & Generative Chat Tools

Library guide on artificial intelligence tools and citing

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and learn like humans. It involves the development of algorithms and computational models that enable computers to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include problem-solving, learning, perception, understanding natural language, and decision-making.

AI can be categorized into two main types: Narrow AI (or Weak AI) and General AI (or Strong AI).

  1. Narrow AI: This type of AI is designed to perform a specific task or a narrow set of tasks. Examples include speech recognition, image recognition, recommendation systems, and language translation. Narrow AI systems are limited to the particular tasks they are designed for and do not possess general intelligence.

  2. General AI: General AI refers to a form of artificial intelligence that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks, similar to human intelligence. Achieving General AI is a complex and challenging goal that involves creating machines with the ability to perform any intellectual task that a human being can.

There are several subfields within AI, including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and expert systems. Machine learning, in particular, is a subset of AI that focuses on developing algorithms that allow computers to learn from data and improve their performance over time without being explicitly programmed.

AI applications are pervasive in today's world, ranging from virtual personal assistants like Siri and Alexa to recommendation systems on streaming platforms, autonomous vehicles, and advanced medical diagnostics. As technology continues to advance, the capabilities of AI are expected to grow, potentially leading to significant societal and economic impacts.

Definition created by ChatGPT on December 21, 2023.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, particularly computer systems. These processes include learning (the acquisition of information and rules for using the information), reasoning (using rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions), and self-correction. AI encompasses a variety of approaches and technologies, including machine learning (where systems can learn from data), natural language processing (enabling machines to understand and generate human language), computer vision (enabling machines to interpret and understand visual information), and robotics (combining hardware and software to create intelligent machines capable of interacting with the physical world).

Generative AI & Research FAQs

These are considered frequently asked questions regarding AI tools. However, this list is not exhaustive. If you have additional questions or comments about using or understanding AI tools, consult with a librarian.

1. Am I cheating if I use Chat GPT or another AI tool?

The two most important things to ensure when using AI tools like Chat GPT are 1) you have clear permission to do so from your instructor and 2) you properly cite and acknowledge the use of AI tools

Using Chat GPT-generated content in your work is "identified as co-authored by you and the generative AI." You can refer to the sharing & publication policy by OpenAI (creators of Chat GPT) here. Failing to properly attribute Chat GPT-generated content is considered plagiarism.

2. Are there privacy concerns to be aware of when using AI tools?

Yes! Like other information available on the Internet, AI tools are much similar. You should be cautious about inputting sensitive or personal material into AI chat bots as the information is then stored.

3. How do I use Chat GPT?

It's simple. Just converse like you would another human. There aren't keywords or techniques needed to receive answers.

Example conversations:

  • You: Please suggest one interesting essay topic related to happiness in modern society.
  • ChatGPT: Sure, here's an essay topic related to happiness in modern society: "The Pursuit of Happiness: How Modern Society's Definition of Success Impacts Our Well-being."
  • You: Can you describe the topic briefly?
  • ChatGPT: Of course! This essay topic explores the relationship between modern society's definition of success and our overall well-being and happiness. It questions whether the current emphasis on external markers of success, such as wealth, status, and achievements, is truly aligned with what makes people happy and fulfilled. The essay can delve into the impact of social media, consumerism, and societal pressures on our happiness and suggest ways to redefine success to prioritize internal well-being and meaningful connections.

4. Do I have to fact-check what AI tools say?

Yes. This is especially important when understanding the material and topic you are researching. There have been incidents of AI tools like Chat GPT to create false information, otherwise known as "AI hallucination." False information could be used and might sound plausible. It is important to use other sources of information to fact-check and confirm that these themes are real. Similarly, some AI tools can only grab content from a set time date, so information may not be entirely up-to-date.
