Library and Information Science: Search tips

Subject terms in LISA

Subject headings in LISA are referred to as descriptors.  All descriptors in LISA are single words or phrases; LISA doesn't sub-divide its headings.

Use the thesaurus to discover the subject headings for your topic.

Search tips

Create a personal account and use the My Research feature to:

  • Save searches and results.
  • Organize your research in folders.
  • Add and share tags.
  • Save your search and display preferences.
  • Manage alerts and RSS feed.

Play with subject headings and keywords

  • Consult the database's thesaurus to identify other relevant headings.
  • No heading in the thesaurus that matches your topic? Try keyword searching instead.
  • Try combining a general subject heading with a specific keyword, e.g. Cataloguing as Subject and Toys as Keyword.
  • When you find a relevant entry, always look to see what descriptors have been assigned to it.
