Formed in 2003, the UI Afro-Cuban Drum and Dance Ensemble is an interdisciplinary program incorporating the three essential elements of the Afro-Cuban folkloric tradition: drums, dance, and song. Instructors and members of the group have traveled to Cuba to study with world-renowned ensembles such as Los Muñequitos de Matanzas and Grupo Afrocuba. The program encompasses three courses cross-listed in the School of Music, the Department of Dance, and the Division of Performing Arts: Introduction to Afro-Cuban Drumming, Introduction to Afro-Cuban Dancing, and Afro-Cuban Drum & Dance Performance. The UI Afro-Cuban Drum and Dance Ensemble performs each fall semester at the Space Place Theater as well as being an active particpant in the UI Arts Share program.
