Seek out reference tools like encyclopedias and specialized dictionaries to:

  • gain and understanding of the subject matter
  • build a relevant vocabulary
  • gather background information to understand the issues

Ask a librarian for help developing a research plan

Find a variety of source types including books, journal articles, authoritative Internet sources, etc. in order to provide varying levels of subject treatment.

Focus on the topic:

  • Take notes to document your research path (terms used, resources searched).
  • Follow footnotes and investigate bibliographies

Evaluate the source of information:

  • primary vs. secondary authority
  • fee-based vs. free databases
  • scholarly vs. popular resources
  • current vs. historical information
  • questions to ask in evaluating web resources:
    • is the facts presented accurate?
    • what are the credentials of the author?
    • is this information current?
    • are the views expressed objective?
