The objective of this guide is to introduce some of the resources available for studying the ancient history of classical Greece and Rome and the lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea from around 1000 BCE to around 400 CE.

The Historical Maps section of the Perry-Castañeda Map Library site includes maps of the ancient world from William Shepherd's Historical Atlas, 1911 and 1923-26 editions, and links to historical maps on other sites. 

The Atlas of Classical History, edited by Richard J. A. Talbert (Routledge, 1985). G1033 .A833 1985,  has more recent maps than Shepherd. It has maps of some archaeological sites such as Persepolis,Athens, Delos, Rome, Pompeii,and Jerusalem, trade routes, significant battlefields, and provincial admistrative divisions. There is also an electronic copy.

The most detailed and comprehensive maps of the ancient Greco-Roman world is the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World, both online and in print, Main Reference G1033 .B3 2000 and in the Map Collection. The Barrington Atlas includes areas touched by Greek and Roman culture ranging from the British Isles to North Africa, Afghanistan, and western China.

Oxford Reference Online is a collection of reference titles arranged by subject. Terms may be searched within a particular subject or across the database.

There are, in addition, a number of print reference tools in the Main Library's Reference collection in the call number range DE5 through DG274. These include the Oxford classical dictionary, 3rd rev. ed., DE5 .O9 2003; also online, http://purl.lib.uiowa.edu/oxford/ocd, and Brill's new Pauly: encyclopaedia of the ancient world, Main Reference DE5 N3913, a multivolume translation into English of the respected German Der neue Pauly: Enzyklopädie der Antike.
