Software Issues: EndNote Issues

This is a repository for issues we've encountered with software, and the solutions to those issues.

Sync Issues

ISSUE:  Endnote Basic not syncing correctly. Online library not matching Desktop.

Solution: Reset synch relationship, delete records in Basic account, resync library.

1. Ensure that you have a backup of the EndNote desktop library with all the references that you wish to sync. Also delete all the duplicates from this library.

For the steps on how to make a backup of the EndNote library see the below knowledge-base article: www.endnote.com/kb/82295

2. Remove the automatic Syncing in EndNote Preferences:

a. Open EndNote desktop.

b. From the Edit menu choose Preferences.

c. Select Sync in the EndNote Preferences window.

d. You will see a radio button labeled “Sync Automatically:”

e. Uncheck Sync Automatically.

f. Press ‘Apply’ and then on ‘OK’ to save and exit the preferences.

3. Make sure you have deleted all the references and all the groups in your EndNote Web account, with the exception of Shared Groups and ResearcherID Groups.

4. Ensure that you empty the Trash both in EndNote web application and in EndNote library.

Now open your new EndNote library and go to EndNote Sync Preferences as listed in steps# 2.a-2.c. Please add this text to the end of your E-Mail Address in this Sync preferences: #!resetLocalSync

5. For example, if email address was user@uiowa.edu, I would change this to user@uiowa.edu#!resetLocalSync Click on Apply and OK.

6. Now, click on Sync.

7. EndNote will then display a message, “Your local sync state has been reset. Please re-enter your E-Mail Address, restart EndNote, and Sync again.” Click on OK.

8. Open the Sync Preferences and re-enter the original email address and password.

9. Please close and reopen EndNote library then click on Sync button again.

10. EndNote will then start to authenticate and return the prompt: “A Sync library can be linked to only one account. Do not proceed unless you intend to break the link to the original account.” Click OK, and EndNote will purge any knowledge of a previous sync.

11. You will be prompted to make a backup. This is up to you, but of course we recommend it.

12. A complete sync will then begin.

Searching Iowa Catalog (InfoHawk+) in EndNote

ISSUE: The U Iowa option under Online Search in EndNote does not work. An error message will read: "Host refused connection at TCP level." How do I fix this?

Solution: Go to Tools>Online Search and look at the information about the Library Catalog file. If it says Aleph, one needs to download and install the new Alma connection file from EndNote website.

1. Download the connection file at  http://endnote.com/downloads/connection/university-iowa

2. Double-click on the downloaded connection file, and it will open in EndNote.

2. Click on File> Save As and save the connection file.

3. Go to the online search mode in EndNote and click on "more" under the list of connection files on the left panel.

4. From the list, browse and select the new connection file you have just saved.

Note: EndNote support has said that currently it is not possible to automatically retrieve the updated content file (connection file/output style/Filter) from within the program. The latest file has to be downloaded and installed separately. The same procedure applies to all type of content files like Output styles, Connection file and Import filters.

EN installation issues

If prompted for product key-- extract files when prompted for product key, find EN folder in downloads and right click to extract files to same location

Direct export helper can sometimes causes installation to halt- if this happens, do custom install and deselect the “direct export helper” check box at bottom of screen. Then go to following link to install the direct export helper manually:https://support.clarivate.com/Endnote/s/article/EndNote-Win-Direct-Export-Helper?language=en_US
