5 million books
In 2009 the UI Libraries collected its 5 millionth book:
The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa
UI Libraries Director Nancy Baker puts this number in perspective for us:
If placed end-to-end, five million books could reach from Iowa City to San Francisco. Five million books translate to 1.67 books for each person in the state of Iowa (but only 1 book for every 3 hogs).
